Calgary Zoo Triggered Best of Show Anvil

By Norma Ramage, Marketing Daily

Peculiar animals took centre stage at Calgary's Anvil Awards show Friday, as for the second straight year, Trigger Communications' "No Substitute for the Zoo" campaign won Best of Show and a clutch of other awards.

Trigger won 10 first place Anvils on the night, but was edged out for most wins by Wax, which took home 11 Anvils. MacLaren McCann, last year's big winner, won eight first place awards.

The offbeat "No Substitute" campaign for the Calgary Zoo, which also took Best of Show honours in 2006, went to the dogs this year, with canines substituting for zoo animals. The mutts included a bulldog with banana tusks, an upside down big-eared chihuahua substituting for a bat and a mutt with a bra on its back filling in for a camel. The campaign also won Anvils in the outdoor series and transit series categories, while another Trigger campaign for the zoo won in the magazine single category. Trigger rounded out the evening with Anvils for public service broadcasting, illustration, non-traditional advertising, outdoor single, transit single and media innovation.

Wax continued its move into the creative forefront of the local advertising scene, more than doubling its five wins in 2006 with 11 Anvils for newspaper series, poster design series, packaging, TV single under $50,000, radio single, radio series, magazine series, website, poster single and for craft copywriting and art direction.

MacLaren McCann was the other big winner, matching its eight first place Anvils in 2006 with wins in the out-of-home, public service print, logo, photography, poster design single, annual report, poster series and advertising campaign categories.

Venture Communications continued to suffer award drought, taking home only two Anvils, for its TV work for clients Sport Chek and Subway. The other multiple winner was Highwood Communications with wins in the corporate identity and newspaper single categories.

It wasn't a big night for the city's smaller agencies, which were mostly shut out of the awards, although Zero Gravity, FishTen and Shine Media each took home an Anvil.
